Stape Silver Band Newsletter Spring 08.
Edition 4.

Hello!
Welcome to the fourth edition of Stape Silver Band’s Bi-Annual Newsletter. We hope that the Newsletter will provide you with information about what has happened over Winter 2007 and our plans for the Spring and Summer 2008. We hope that you will feel both informed and involved. Enjoy!

Christmas Playing on Westgate, Pickering in 1992 Christmas Concert and Christmas Playing 2007
As usual our annual Christmas concert was held in St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church at Pickering. The band has consistently performed its annual carol concert in the town for the coffers of Yorkshire Cancer Research and this year was no exception. 2007 was the band’s 41st year of supporting this worthy charity and assisting in raising large amounts of money for the continued research needed. This year’s concert saw the band perform Christmas arrangements and carols for a large audience with a guest performance by Trevor Boag, and a small group of followers who performed readings and Yorkshire dialect stories, always popular with our audience. Every year the band undertakes its Christmas playing around the street of Pickering in a effort to raise band funds and provide a little Christmas cheer to all in the run up to the holiday season. Always well received by local residents and this year was no exception with the band raising £1,521.82 for band funds. The nights were cold and many frozen valves were experienced but the band played on! Thanks to all our supporters in Pickering who with their donations makes the freezing temperatures bearable.

Darlington Contest 29th March 2008

Another year and another North of England Regional Contest. This newsletter is slightly delayed due to the rescheduling of the Area contest which is usually held mid March. Each year the band practices for months on one particular piece to be played at the contest in the hope of securing either a first or second place and a chance to compete at the National Finals held in September. This year was no exception with the band practicing from January on the third section test piece, ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. This piece composed by Paul Lovatt-Cooper has taken all the bands efforts and enthusiasm to put up a good performance. The piece is not a traditional brass arrangement and the composer describes it as “his musical imagination of the dark side of the moon”. Intensive rehearsals during the weeks leading up to the contest heard the band playing well and really getting to grips with this challenging piece. The piece is quiet, exposed and then highly volatile and loud in other places with an array of percussions instruments and techniques used throughout. Finally the days of practicing had ebbed away and the contest day was upon us. The band set off to the Dolphin Centre Darlington, home to this regional contest for some years. Things looked to be going wrong from the start with our bus driver scared to go down Sutton Bank and therefore opting for the winding Chop Gate to Stokesley Road. Finally we reached our destination and luckily no sick passengers to report. The draw for playing order took place at 11.00am and we were unluckily drawn last in order of play. This meant a wait of about 4 hours before we played. Shopping and eating seemed to occupy the band for the next few hours until we were in our stage uniforms and ready to play. A few words of encouragement from the conductor and we were off. Good start and the piece seemed to flow well with all players enjoying the experience. Unfortunately the adjudicator did not agree and we were placed 7th out of 8 bands. Never mind we will have another go next year and hopefully secure a National Finals Place!

Sharon Allanson Name:Sharon Allanson
Position:Soprano Cornet Player

Hi everyone, my name is Sharon Allanson and at present I hold the position of Soprano Cornet Player in the band. I’ve held this solo position for a number of years at Stape Silver Band.
I started learning the trumpet at school when I was 12 and then my dad heard about the band and encouraged me to join as he used to play in Pickering Town Band when he was a boy.
I joined the senior band on 3rd cornet when I was 13 and I moved up the cornet line through the years ending up as Principal Cornet for the band. I played as Principal for a couple of years but then took a break from playing due to my work commitments in a nursing home, which did not allow me the time to attend practices and weekend engagements.
I really missed not playing for the band during that time as it had been a big part of my life. Then one day, Mike, our band master came round and asked if I’d consider rejoining the band and doing what I could around my work commitments. I agreed and rejoined the band on solo cornet.
After a little while our Soprano Player, Sue Smith, had to leave the band and Mike asked me to take over and for the most part I’ve been there ever since, apart from a short spell on Flugel Horn.
My time with the band so far has been very fulfilling and enjoyable especially competing in contests and going on tours to Holland, Germany and Belgium. I hope to continue playing for a long time yet and hopefully contribute towards the bands future success.
See you all at the next concert, Sharon.

Malton Contest 2nd November 2008
Each year in November the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association runs an Entertainment Contest held in Malton. This contest is our local contest and as such we are annual attendees. The format of the contest is a 20 minute entertainment programme which must include a Stand Up Solo and March.
The 2007 contest was no different to any other year for Stape Silver Band. Much deliberating over the pieces within the programme and their merits for entertainment value and who would volunteer for the solo or would our conductor nominate an individual. Entertainment value is the most difficult part of assessing the programme as this is very much personal to the individual listening to the performance. Some people like the modern Film and TV arrangements which inject familiarity while others prefer the inclusion of a traditional brass band arrangement. Our programme as usual was varied and we hoped this hit the spot with the adjudicator Roy Roe.
The band took to the stage in a relaxed state of mind with determination to put up a good performance of a programme we had been practicing for weeks. Our first piece was the Magnificent Seven written by Elmer Bernstein and arranged by a brass band favourite Alan Fernie. This piece was a rousing start for the band and got the audience tapping their feet. Next into the stand up solo, this year played by Sharon Allanson, the bands Soprano Cornet player. The solo played was a traditional New Zealand air arranged by Geoff Richards and titled Pokarekare Ana. Sharon played well and put a real shine on the bands performance. The bands choice of mandatory march in the programme came next with the Lights of Europe by Harm Evans. A good quality march with two very different styles within the phrasing. An enjoyable piece for the band this, and continued to be in our programme for the Christmas Concert. The band then moved onto a slow piece and yet another Traditional New Zealand air arranged by Peter Graham and titled Hine e Hine. This piece shows off the bands quality of sound and all seemed to be going well. Finally we reached our concluding programme piece and all players were focused for finishing with a bang. Pirates of the Caribbean arranged by John Blanken. A topical piece of film music with the recent release of another pirate’s movie.
A good programme and sound performance had the band keeping its fingers crossed for the results. The competition at this contest is pretty strong and every band knows it’s all down to the man in the box.
The results were out and Stape managed to net the first prize and a few others to compliment it along the way. Full results can be found on our Malton Contest page.

The contest at Malton is always a really good day out and all ran to time. Our band was really pleased with this result and will be looking forward to defending our title in 2008.

Recruitment of New Players

Stape Silver Band are always recruiting new, or embracing the return of old players, to the band. In order for the band to continue its success we need to have learners for the future band and a full Senior band to compete at contests.
If you have played in the past and fancy giving it another go, or you want a new interest for either yourself or your child, please get in contact.
For learners we provide a good quality instruments and one-to-one tuition weekly all year round for £25.00 per year.
Brass banding is similar to any other team sport needing 25-28 players and as such we can not field only 10 players for the cup final.

Stape Silver Band Newsletter Autumn 07.
Edition 3.

Hello!
Welcome to the third edition of Stape Silver Band’s bi-annual Newsletter. We hope that the Newsletter will provide you with information about what has happened over Summer 2006 and our plans for Winter and Spring 2007. We hope that you will feel both informed and involved. Enjoy!

Kat and Ash WeddingStape Silver Band Wedding of the Year 2007
Mr & Mrs Smith 23rd June 2007
Our very own Principal Cornet and Percussionist
After playing in the band together for numerous years two, of our long-termers tie the knot. Miss Katharine Sisk who has played for the band for 12 years and Mr Ashley Smith with 25 years service married at St. Gregory’s Minster, Kirkdale on the 23rd June 2007. Katharine is currently the band’s Principal Cornet and looked stunning on her wedding day, living up to her usual shine as she does on contest stages. Ashley, as our Percussionist was able to keep the pace on their big day. The band members performed the Guard of Honour in celebration of the wedding and all wish Kat and Ash a happy future together.

Summer Concerts 2007
What have we been up to all Summer?

Burnby Hall, Pocklington
This year at Pocklington we had a few players short as Katharine and Ashley were still on their honeymoon. The heavy rainstorm didn’t deter the captive audience who sat under their umbrellas during the continuous rain that fell all afternoon. The band, however were fine under the covered bandstand and played on regardless. A good full audience as usual despite the persistent rain.
Retired Caravanner's Association, Malton.
Each year the band is pleased to perform for the Retired Caravaner’s Association at Malton Rugby Club. I would hazard a guess the number of caravans pitched around the rugby field must top 50 and we always have a packed house for the Tuesday night concert. This year was no exception and the encore of the Floral Dance brought the house down! A very pleasurable audience to play for always one the band looks forward to.
Crescent Gardens, Filey
In Filey again. Doesn’t seem like a year since we were here last. Many locals said that we were the first band to bring them the sunshine for 2007. The deck chairs were out and the audience seemed to enjoy our varied programme from The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’ to a Salvation Army Arrangement of the Euphonium Solo ‘There Will Be God’, by Bethany Breckon.
Scarborough Spa Sun Lounge
This was a new venue for us. The Spa Sun Lounge on the South side of Scarborough, having usually played across the water in Peasholme Park. This was a classy setting, being sheltered from the wind; however the rain decided to fall in the second half and the audience ran for cover. Our only male junior member , Matthew Searson, age 13, performed his first solo by playing the first verse of Amazing Grace. The poor lad was nervous all week but did not let the nerves over-come him and played it well. The smile of relief on his face when he finished said it all.
Matthew Searson, First Solo.
York Parliament Street
York City council pay us to perform an open-air concert in the centre of York outside Marks and Spencer’s. The weather stayed fine and Katharine, Lauren and Dave featuring in ‘12th Street Rag’, which has proved to be a very popular number this summer.

Bethany Breckon Name:Bethany Breckon
Position:Principal Euphonium Player

I do have a brass band history I suppose. My dad played in the band, his dad did too. You could say it runs in the family. I didn't really want to start when I was young because I thought it was a waste of time and boring. My mum, dad and sister all went off to band on a Tuesday and Thursday night, which left me being looked after my Grandmothers.
I first started playing when I was about 7. I started to learn on the cornet, as I thought it was easy to start off with. Once I was good enough I started to play in the Senior Band when I was 9, on the 3rd cornet. The first contest I played was Darlington and I was indeed very nervous. I moved up to Flugel horn and had good comments posted about me on the website ‘4-Bars-rest’ in 2005. Later that year I transferred to the Euphonium, playing Entertainments by Gilbert Vinter at the area contest as my first test piece on this particular instrument. The band being placed second on this occasion. The band hasn’t had much luck over the years with euphonium players, they maybe think it’s hard; I don’t know, but we have had people come and go.
In 2006 I played the Euphonium solo ‘There will be God’ at Malton contest. Unluckily I didn’t win the soloist prize, but the band won four of the five trophies that were on offer to win. I have now been playing for quite sometime and enjoy the band practices and the challenge of working out how to play new pieces. I think I have progressed a lot over the years and hopefully will carry on playing for sometime to come.

The History of Stape Silver Band
Stape Silver Band was established in 1884 in Newtondale, a farming community close to the edge of the North York Moors. The band entered local contests in the early 1900’s and won many prizes including the ‘Jingling Johnny’, a trophy which was presented to the band at the first Douthwaite Dale competition. ‘Jingling Johnny’, one of the strangest looking trophies now resides in a collection held at the York Castle Museum.
Stape Band
Old Stape Silver Band based at Stape Village.
In the mid 1900’s the band had to practice in various locations around the village of Stape, including the old chapel and the house situated opposite. In the early 1960’s the band moved to the town of Pickering, where it operates from today. When the band first moved to Pickering they rehearsed in a small room in W.J. Robinson’s Egg Packing Station.
Thonton Le Dale 1979
Thornton Le Dale 1979.
The band progressed; and found that, in the mid 1980’s they required a new challenge and signed to enter the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association giving them the chance to enter many new contests. In the first year the band claimed 1st prize for their hymn playing, and has since gained numerous prizes for their hymn, march and selection areas of the contest. In 1989 the band opened its own bandroom, situated in Outgang Lane in Pickering. The bandroom was funded 50% by the band, with the remainder given by the local council.
In 1992 Stape entered the North of England regional qualifying contest in Darlington. The following year the band won the contest thereby earning a place at the National Finals then held at the Wembley Conference Centre in London.
During the Summer of 2003 the band embarked on a European Tour, playing concerts in Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp over a 4 day period. This opportunity allowed the band to play for different audiences who enjoyed the concerts immensely.
The band has continued to make progress and after a series of good results in the 4th section was promoted to section 3 at the beginning of 2003. Despite moving up a section the band gained a well-earned second place, again earning a place at the National Finals held in Dundee.
Stape yet again reached the National Finals in 2006 which were held at Harrogate. A disappointing result this time...but we will try again!

Ten Things You’ll Never Hear the Conductor Say.

1. Gee, that's a boring hymn. Let's play another one
2. Well played, everyone. Let's go home early.
3. I wasn't much of a player, myself.
4. Nicely played, trombones. So tuneful.
5. If you can't play it, don't worry about it.
6. What do you think?
7. I never wanted to be a conductor. I wanted to be a lumberjack.
8. Of course you can miss rehearsals. We're so fortunate that you choose to play with us.
9. Sorry, I lied. We have absolutely no chance of winning anything - ever!
10. I was wrong.

Stape Silver Band Newsletter Spring 07.
Edition 2.

Hello!
Welcome to the second edition of Stape Silver Band’s bi-annual Newsletter. We hope that the Newsletter will provide you with information about what has happened over Autumn and winter and our plans for Spring and summer. We hope that you will feel both informed and involved. Enjoy!

Stape Band’s Christmas Concert 2006
Our annual Christmas concert was held in St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church at Pickering. The band has performed its annual carol concert in the town for the coffers of Yorkshire Cancer Research and this year was no exception. In 2006 the band supported this worthy charity for 40 years, raising large amounts of money. This year’s concert saw the band perform Christmas arrangements and carols for the 150 strong audience to have a singsong, with a guest performance by the Lockton & Levisham Bell Ringers. The concert raised £500 for its supported charity, which will be put to great use in the break through research being undertaken in Yorkshire, into this devastating disease.
Christmas Concert Awards Christmas Concert Award winners (left to right): Helen Bointon, Peter Rob, Ashley Smith & Colette Southwell.

Prize Giving for Band Members and Supporters.
The band presents its annual trophies to band members and supporters, within the Christmas Concert.
Ashley SmithThis year saw the 25 yr Service Award given to one of our loyal crew, Ashley Smith. Ashley started playing with the band at the age of seven when he took up the drums and has been a consistent member of the line up playing hundreds of concerts and contests. Well done Ash and keep up the good work!!!
A very young Ashley Smith in the early days with Stape Silver Band ~ The drum is bigger than the drummer boy!

The Millennium Trophy, awarded to a faithful supporter of the band was awarded to Gwen Andrews for her continued efforts in assisting in the running of the fortnightly domino drives for band funds, and not forgetting those home-made biscuits.

The Fields Trophy is awarded to the Senior Player who has shown the most progress over the last year. This year it was awarded to a player who had their arm twisted to return to the band after a many year absence raising their family. Helen Bointon, a player with much experience in years gone past returned to the band to complete our line up for the Regional Contest last March. After winning through to the finals there was no chance we were going to let her go and I am please to say she is still with us. Returning to the band on Eb Bass, an instrument that is new to her, she has made great progress and is a real asset to the band.
The WJ Robinson Trophy awarded to the Most Improved Junior Player, was this year presented to Peter Rob. Peter started learning with the band about 18 months ago and has persevered on a difficult instrument for children to master, the Trombone. We look forward to Peter progressing further and hopefully filling one of our trombone positions in the future.
A Certificate of Outstanding Achievement was also presented to Colette Southwell for her fantastic effort in learning the tenor horn and being promoted to the senior band within 6 months. Great achievement Colette!!!

Katharine Sisk Name:Katharine Sisk
Position:Principal Cornet Player

A Chance encounter with a tenor horn at school aged 11 started my brass band playing which aged 23 has already been going 12 years. I joined Stape Silver Band shortly after beginning to learn and played my first contest, Easingwold Marching contest at aged 12. Unlike many brass players within the band and banding generally I have less of a brass band history, to date whilst I have helped out a few bands when needed I have only been registered with Stape Silver Band, but have however made my way rounds a number of seats within the band. Moving up into Senior Band I started on 2nd Horn then moved over the Cornet section 2nd Cornet, Repiano, 4th man down on the front row, 2nd man down and then onto the Flugel Horn where I stayed for a couple of years. The last move about 3 years ago was into the Principal Cornet chair where I am still sat, working closely with Lauren on 2nd man down and a strong cornet team we have become part of a very successful band in 2006. Besides playing I am a committee member & child protection officer for the band oh and I am marrying the percussionist in June so most people would agree that this band has been and will continue to be a large part of my life.

Malton Brass 2006

On Sunday 26th November 2006 Stape Silver Band attended the annual Yorkshire and Humberside Malton Brass Band Contest. The contest held at the Milton Rooms Malton, is split into three sections; Class C - Unregistered Bands, Class B - 4th and 3rd Section Bands and Class A - 2nd, 1st and Championship Section Bands. Competing bands must be registered with the Yorkshire and Humberside Association and all must play a 25-minute entertainment program adjudicated by Ray Farr.
Nigel Sutherland Stape Silver Band competed in Class B under the direction of Nigel Sutherland. Nigel is an old friend to the band and has in the past been the band’s Principal Cornet. Having played for many years, recently with the Yorkshire Imps, Nigel decided he wanted to try his arm at conducting. Having a shortage of players in the lead up to the contest Mike Breckon, our usual Bandmaster, took it upon himself to learn a new instrument, the Trombone. As you will remember from Mike’s player profile in the last edition of the newsletter, Mike has played for years prior to taking up the role of bandmaster, although has never played Trombone.

Two weeks prior to the contest and still many players missing, we were able to attract the services of a Trombone player willing to assist in our cause. This gave our faithful Bandmaster a reprieve, although not much as he now stepped into the 2nd Euphonium position. Much dedicated practice followed and the band rehearsed its programme for performance as follows:-
March – Boadicea
Euphonium Solo – There Will Be God
Home Away From Home
Hogarths Hoedown
American Trilogy
The band, which has a large amount of children within its line up with some performing their first contest, started securely and followed the calm direction of Nigel. Next came the Euphonium solo performed by Bethany Breckon (one of our talented children at just 12 years old) and was performed beautifully. Home Away From Home is a number many of you will of heard in our recent summer programmes and features the horn section of the band. Our next piece Hogarth’s Hoedown (inside knowledge told us this composer was a favourite of the adjudicator) went well and danced along and finally the sound building to finalise our programme with the large feature piece of American anthems. The entire band was pleased with our performance and enjoyed it immensely, but now was for the nerve-racking wait for the results.
The band gathered in the hall for the results where the adjudicator Ray Farr commented on the performances he has heard. Comments included good direction by the winning band’s conductor, strength within solo performances and nicely balanced programme choices. Contests always present the results in reverse order and this was no exception and when the fourth and third positions were announced, with no mention of Stape Silver, things were looking rather hopeful. The Band was placed first and also picked up prizes for Best Basses in the March, Best Euphonium, Best Bass Solo and the Best Ryedale Band. Picking up 5 out of the 6 prizes available the band were thrilled and look forward to many more successes in the future.
Trophies!!!

Annual Slow Melody Solo Competition
Each year in October/November the band holds its annual solo competition for the junior members of the band. All junior players from the very beginners to the children and teenagers playing in the senior band are encouraged to take part by playing a Slow Melody. This help the children to gain confidence in playing solos in front of an audience, hopefully growing our principal players of the future. Attended by all the parents and many senior band players this event held in our band room is both nerve-racking for the participants and audience alike. For many of the young player this was their first participation at this event, and sitting in the audience, the feelings of years gone past when I performed, were brought back vividly.
Solo Competition
All of the children competing (see above) this year performed really well with special praise going to the winners of each section.
The Senior Section won by Lauren Breckon, Junior Section by Sarah Bointon and the Learners by Leane Nicholson (below).
Stape Silver Band is committed to its young players as we realise that the band would fail to continue without the injection of new learners each year. Excellent tuition coupled with encouragement for all young players to achieve their potential is the basis of the organisation.

Mike Breckon Name:Mike Breckon
Position:Musical Director

Mike Breckon began his playing career at the age of 11, learning Trumpet at school & joining SSB 3 months later. At 15 he entered boys service with the Junior Leaders Regiment in Dorset attending the Royal Military School of Music 2 years later, & served with the Rhine Staff Band in Germany gaining much experience on Solo Cornet, & playing Trumpet in the dance band. On leaving the Armed Forces he auditioned for a place in Hammond’s Sauce Works Band under Geoffrey Whitham where he stayed for 3 years during a successful period for the band, competing in the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, the British Open Championships & the Granada Band of the Year both held at Belle Vue Manchester & enjoying a 2 week tour of Australia. Mike then returned to Pickering playing Cornet for both SSB & Kirbymoorside band with which he also tasted considerable success in competition. In the early 1980’s as Deputy Bandmaster, he was responsible for teaching many young players. He encouraged the band to attend its first contest for many years winning 3 trophies on that first outing. As Bandmaster since 1984 he has led the band to many more contest successes qualifying for the National Finals in 1993, 2003 & again in 2006.

National Brass band Championships 2006

So how did we get to the 2006 National Brass Band Finals?
Well, on the 19th of March 2006 the band made their way up to Darlington to compete in the Area Finals. There are 5 sections, a bit like the football league except in Brass Band World we have the Championship and sections one to four. This year Stape Silver Band competed in section three. The two bands awarded the highest points in each section are invited to represent their region in the National Finals. This year Stape Silver Band were awarded second place. Ranked the outsiders, you could imagine how thrilled the band was! This year the finals will be held in Harrogate at the Harrogate International Centre on 23rd and 24th September. The band will be staying in Harrogate on Friday night in preparation for section three which competes on Saturday morning. Following a rehearsal on Friday evening and a good nights sleep for all players, everyone will be ready to put all the hard work into practice, and put on a superb performance.

What is the test Piece?

This year, all the bands in section 3 will be playing a piece of music called ‘Sinfonietta in three movements, for Brass Band’ written by a famous composer of brass band music Gordon Langford. He wrote the piece to be used for the first section in the National Brass Band Finals back in 1975. The skills of musicians have moved on and it is now challenging those bands across the county who compete against each other on Saturday 23rd September in Harrogate in the National Finals in 2006. Incidentally, the first movement was used for the theme tune for the TV Programme ‘Best of Brass’, where two bands competed against each other.

Many Thanks!!!

Stape Silver Band would like to thank everyone who has been involved in supporting the band to raise the funds required to get all the players to the National Finals. The band has applied for a number of grants along with a number of fundraising events throughout the summer. Without this support we would not have even made it to Harrogate.

Band Members

Cornet

As with any team, each individual has a role in producing the collective end result. In our case, to play music! We have a wide repertoire of music from hymns to modern pop music, and everything else in between. We value both our players and supporters. Where would we be without our supporters? Mum or Dad dropping the kids off for band practice (and paying their subs too!), regular helpers at domino and bingo fundraising evenings to collectors in all weather, summer sun and winter snow!
So who makes up our players and where do they come from? There are many youngsters in the band, with the youngest being only 12 and our oldest being, well, we shouldn’t tell as we will get into trouble! We have a collective of talents from purchasers to bakers, scientists to driving instructors, insurance clerks to retail managers. Everyone’s skills help to keep the band ticking over, help the books to balance and get us from A to B. We are based in Pickering, but distance doesn’t stop some people travelling far and wide to help us out. We have friends in York, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester. And we know we can count on them if we need them.

We are always on the look out for new talent, weather you can play and want to return, or if you fancy trying your hand at a brass instrument. Everyone is welcome to join us—we are a happy, friendly bunch who works hard and enjoys the traditions of brass banding — a family approach and a good pint at the end of a rehearsal!
