Player History: Mike Breckon began his playing career at the age of 11, learning Trumpet at school & joining SSB 3 months later. At 15 he entered boys service with the Junior Leaders Regiment in Dorset attending the Royal Military School of Music 2 years later, & served with the Rhine Staff Band in Germany gaining much experience on Solo Cornet, & playing Trumpet in the dance band. On leaving the Armed Forces he auditioned for a place in infamous Hammond's Sauce Works Band under Geoffrey Whitham where he stayed for 3 years during a successful period for the band, competing in the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, the British Open Championships & the Granada Band of the Year both held at Belle Vue Manchester & enjoying a 2 week tour of Australia. Mike then returned to Pickering playing Cornet for both SSB & Kirbymoorside band with which he also tasted considerable success in competition. In the early 1980's as Deputy Bandmaster, he was responsible for teaching many young players. He encouraged the band to attend its first contest for many years winning 3 trophies on that first outing. As Bandmaster since 1984 he has led the band to many more contest successes qualifying for the National Finals in 1993, 2003 & again in 2006.
